Altfinstermünz is a fortress complex. The Via Claudia Augusta went through here, the Roman imperial road over the Alps from the Po valley over the Reschenpass to Augsburg. Until the construction of the new Reschenstrasse (1850-1854), the entire traffic went through Altfinstermünz. Special features of the border fortresses are the defence tower with pitch nose, the hermitage with passage and on a ledge the Sigmundsegg rectangular tower. You can go up to the fortress tower through a cave passage. The renovated chapel stands near the old customs hold in the Inn gorge.
The tour that awaits you starts at Camping Via Claudia See. It follows the Inn up to Altfinstermünz and on to Gasthaus Hochfinstermünz, then back to the start.
