Due to its central location Finstermünz has always been of great importance - on the one hand as connecting point between the Inntal valley, the Vinschgau and the Engadin and on the other hand as border post. The old Romans were the first build a military road through the gorge and a wooden bridge across the River Inn. Today´s bridge with the mighty tower was built in the Middle Ages. First written accounts of the fortification date from 1263. The steep and winding road was already in use around 1380.
